Welcome to Don Bosco Youth Hostel

Who is Don Bosco?

John Bosco was a priest who lived in northern Italy in the mid 19th century. He is known worldwide simply as “Don Bosco” (Italian for “Father Bosco”). He began his work helping young people who were forced into the city by the Industrial Revolution. Many of them found idleness and trouble instead of work and roamed the city aimlessly, fighting, stealing and begging to survive. Don Bosco provided a place of safety for them to stay, which included a school to educate them, a parish church and training for employment. He insisted that their employers had fair contracts with their young workers. He is the founder of the Salesians who run this hostel. John BoscoThe name ‘Salesian’ comes from the name St Francis De Salle who was a Catholic Bishop in France in the 16th Century. He was well known for his kindness and pastoral sensitivity for all those met
